Yogyakarta, May 20, 2025 – The Faculty of Islamic Economics and Business (FEBI) of the State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta has once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening academic literacy and global contributions by holding an International Stadium Generale with the theme “Harnessing Family Waqf and Islamic Social Finance: Quranic Foundation for Education, Prosperity, and Well-being.”
This activity is part of a series of FEBI internationalization programs and has succeeded in bringing together academics, practitioners, students, and stakeholders who have great concern for issues of waqf, zakat, and Islamic social finance. The two main speakers in this activity were Dr. Muhammad Hamizan Abd Hamid from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia and Agus Faisal, S.E.I., M.E.I., a lecturer at FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
Opening that Stimulates Intellectual Spirit
The event was opened with a solemn atmosphere through the recitation of the holy verses of the Qur'an, followed by the song Indonesia Raya and the Hymn of UIN Sunan Kalijaga. In his speech, the head of FEBI emphasized the importance of making this kind of academic forum as part of the effort to build a transnational, inclusive, and sustainable Islamic scientific ecosystem.
The forum was attended by hundreds of participants from various academic backgrounds, both from UIN and foreign institutions. The presence of participants offline and online showed high enthusiasm for the theme raised, and strengthened UIN Sunan Kalijaga's position as a reference for contemporary Islamic studies in the Southeast Asia region.
Dr. Hamizan's Presentation: Revitalizing Family Waqf
Dr. Muhammad Hamizan opened the plenary session with a presentation entitled "Revitalizing Family Waqf for Education and Skill Development." In his presentation, he explained the concept of family waqf as a philanthropic instrument that has great potential in empowering the economy of families and communities in a sustainable manner.
He highlighted various problems currently faced by the management of family waqf, including weak governance, lack of professional management, and the absence of an asset digitalization system. To address these issues, he proposed the establishment of a family waqf corporation, a special body in the form of a corporation that is managed professionally by integrating sharia principles and national positive law.
The utilization of family waqf, he continued, can be focused on educational scholarships, skills training (TVET), microfinance, and empowerment of small businesses. He also encouraged the provision of fiscal incentives for waqf managers, as well as the importance of harmonizing regulations between sharia institutions and civil authorities.
Agus Faisal's View: Zakat Roadmap 2045
The second session continued with a presentation from Agus Faisal, S.E.I., M.E.I., who presented the material "Indonesian Zakat Roadmap 2045." In his presentation, Agus emphasized the importance of repositioning zakat as an integral part of the national welfare system, especially in order to support the Indonesia Emas 2045 agenda.
He explained the national strategic framework for zakat which includes increasing zakat literacy, strengthening amil institutions, developing regulations, and integration with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of the innovative programs raised is Zakat Village, a community-based community empowerment program through synergy between BAZNAS, local governments, and the Ministry of Religion.
Not only that, Agus also introduced Cash Waqf Linked Sukuk (CWLS) as an Islamic social financial instrument that is able to connect waqf funds with development projects through sharia securities. This model is considered strategic in overcoming the challenges of funding productive and sustainable social development.
FEBI as the Center for Islamic Social Financial Innovation
With the implementation of this activity, FEBI UIN Sunan Kalijaga shows its seriousness in establishing its position as a center of excellence in the field of Islamic social finance. This forum is a place to disseminate ideas and a strategic space to strengthen cross-institutional collaboration in research, publication, and community service.
This activity also provides encouragement for students and lecturers to be more active in multidisciplinary research, especially in the fields of Islamic Social Finance, Islamic Philanthropy, and Sustainable Islamic Development. Forums like this are catalysts in creating real solutions based on Islamic science that are able to respond to the challenges of the times.
The International Stadium Generale was closed with the presentation of souvenirs to the speakers and documentation with all participants. This moment not only marked the end of the series of events, but also the beginning of further collaboration in developing the science and practice of Islamic social finance.
